Tragic Equations

The Aurora Shooting has brought up many questions and thoughts. This paper is to deal with those thoughts as best as possible. While doing so, an attempt to create equations for the ideas shown will also be given. This is an attempt to understand. The first thing that we will study is how people have responded to the shooting and how likely their ideas would work. The second part is how an attacker chooses his location.
The first common statement is that if there had been some form of regulation on guns, or mentally ill then the tragedy wouldn’t have happened.
The thoughts of regulation come with the idea that somehow the person involved will cooperate. The Aurora Theater had a firearm ban in it[1]. As did Virginia Tech[2]. The killer simply ignored the laws.
The second thought on regulation is for those that are mentally ill. This doesn’t work because only 10% of serial killers or mass murderers are mentally ill[3]. This is more of an attempt by the media to explain what is happening. The reason why the idea continues is how hard it is to stop[4].
Regulations only work if the person involved believes it is in their best interest to continue to cooperate. Punishment is only a detriment if the person believes they will be punished or that being punished is a bad thing.
The next thought is in the other direction, if the gun free zone had been lifted there would have been less injured. This actually takes in a lot of information to properly assess it. To keep it basic the paper will assess what is considered the more important factors of a ‘hero’.
The first question is how distracted the hero is. The question goes into how immersed they are in another subject. Much as a person enjoying a book may not notice it is snowing. Or the famous video of a breakdancing bear[5]. The concentration and emotional self during the movie may be with the movie itself. The mind is not ready for an attack.
The next part is the ability to get a shot. This includes closeness to the attacker, the amount of chaos going on around them, and how well the attacker can take a shot.
If the person is carrying a handgun, the likelihood of needing to be close for the shot increases. The need for a specific shot also increases the difficulty. The Aurora shooter, “was dressed head-to-toe in black bullet-proof gear, including helmet, vest, leggings and a groin and throat protector. He wore a gas mask, goggles and black gloves[6].”
The gun would not harm the attacker, though it may distract him. The use of the gun may be most useful as a deterrent or distractor than fighting back. A common use of handguns when dealing with bears is to fire in the air or into the ground. The sound itself and the sight of the gun is enough to scare the bear away. However, this does not always work and may do the opposite of expected.
The Aurora Shooter was wearing armor, and thus, prepared to be shot and, likely would not have been scared off from hearing a gun.
The next part is the amount of chaos going on. A trained military or police person may be able to take a longer shot in a calm shooting range, but the amount of chaos around them will prove to be distracting. They must go from concentrating on the movie, realize what is happening, and then begin concentration on the shot being taken. The change of thought from one place to another may not give enough time for the person to respond and not be shot.
The killer themselves and their active mind is now part of the equation. The approximate time from beginning to fire to when they hit the hero. The time can be extended if the hero hides or ducks, but this increases the chances of more people being killed as the person prepares his or her shot. It is time of the hero to get the needed shot vs the time the attacker has already shot him.
So, lets set it up. For simplicity sake, we will be using the wikipedia page on what happened[7].
It took James Holmes around one minute to shoot 70 people. It’s unknown how many shots he took, but it is known that he used several weapons, and one had jammed around 30 shots. So, it took less than a second for each person to be shot.
The hero would need to be closer to the front for the best chances of taking the shot. James Holmes started at the front and began to shoot into the crowd, after throwing gas canisters into the theater. The chaos level would be high, and there would be a push to leave the room. It would take about five seconds to go from one row to the next, and not be shot.
So the first row contained a guessed at 10 people. It would take about 8 seconds to shoot a row. At about two rows in, the audience would realize what is happening and begin to move backwards. The attacker would shoot at the crowds and anyone looking menacing.
So if the hero was in the first or second row, they would have been down before even realizing what was happening. The next row would have moved to exit and thus created a higher injury amount at this point.
For every row back, we will say that it took 10 more seconds for the hero to realize what is happening and begin to concentrate on getting the proper shot.
The hero very likely is holding a concealed firearm or handgun. The best shot would be within 10 feet. As Holmes shoots away, the hero would need to maneuver through the crowd to get to a spot both hidden and easy to take the shot. So the second row.
It would still take another 20-30 seconds to get to the spot and stop Holmes. Holmes does not need to move forward because his weapons can cover the entire length of the room easier than the hero with the handgun. Holmes does not need the preciseness of the shot to take him down because the crowd is not armored.
By row three if the hero has realized what has happened it will take him five seconds to get in place, and about 25 seconds of getting out of the flow of the movie. By this point 30 people have been shot. Row four it is 34 seconds and then ten seconds to get into the shot spot. About 50 people have been shot. By row five it is too late, the amount shot will be about the same amount of time as if the armed person had never been there.
So, we look at the shot to amount of time ratio. 60 seconds to 70 hits or .86 hits a second. After 40 seconds it is too late to stop the attack and make a difference. For the hero to stop it right at the moment of the attack, would need prior knowledge of the attack.
To check the equation it is time of attack divided by number hit Ta/I. Then a comparison of time of realization to time for position. The knowledge of guns being used and amount of chaos help with assessing the time for position. Realization time will have to take testing and knowledge so for this paper a guess was made. So (R+P)*(Ta/I) will give you an approximate amount of how many people were hit as the hero worked to save the day.
Within 40 seconds is the amount of time for the hero to realize what needs to happen. Any later and it wouldn’t matter.
Adding more details about what if more than one person had a gun, would make the equation longer, but can be figured out slowly but surely. The big problem would be assessing if the heroes realized what the other heroes were doing or trying to stop them.
The comments from the progun sites make it seem simple and easy to get a shot like this done. In reality it would be difficult and after a certain point, not matter.
The next part is to understand why people would want more or less regulations on handguns. Neither of these ideas work to the amount they are promoting them. The answer lies within movies themselves. When a villain appears and does something dastardly, the viewer imagines a way that punishes the villain for what he has done. This narrative is part of the story within movies and also within our own minds.
We do not think of things without a narrative. So the villain is punished in our minds even before he is actually punished within the movies. The imagined situation within the pro and anti gun groups are attempts to create a narrative to what happened.
Within the mind of the pro gun lobbyist, the hero stops the villain and everyone praises him for his skill. The antigun lobbyist view that society itself will stop the thoughts of the attacker and this will save the day. It is an attempt to deal with the chaos of the shooting.
Society is built with reciprocity, and thus rules are placed to respond to unwanted actions. It seems insane to people that someone would ignore these rules of society completely and do something like this. Unable to handle these ideas, the reader finds another subject they know and apply it to the situation.
Now we finally can look at the mind of the attacker himself. This part will be an attempt to predict the mind of the average attacker and also why he chooses what he chooses.
Likewise the attacker is building up a narrative. He views himself as something above the law, and greater than those he is about to attack. There is a disconnect between himself and the average person. The narrative is for them to show their power over others. This is what the average psychologist can get from the various shootings[8]. It is very general and does not work if you try to write out an equation for it. Being by yourself a lot may mean you view yourself as more important, or you have a fear of crowds. Too much is unknown to make an educated guess.
However, this description does give us a good indicator of places that can be attacked, how, why, and sometimes when.
The first part is to find a place where people are cooperating but know there is an end to this cooperation. A movie theater, a school, or even a shopping center are likely places. For the betterment of everyone there are unsaid rules for how you should act in a movie theater, and how to respond when things happen. Any rule that needs to be shown over and over will be displayed on the screen, for instance what to do with your cellphone.
The entire point of this cooperation is to allow each individual the chance to enjoy the movie. Doing something against this idea will in fact be noticeable by all the participants. When the movie is over, everyone gets up to leave and will likely never see the other viewers again. So complete strangers walk in, cooperate, and walk out[9].
The same is with school, the knowledge of graduation and never having to deal with people again allows the student to cooperate for now, but knowing it won’t last forever. Once again, not following the cooperation standards that are constantly being stated to the students would be noticeable. These standards can be varied and odd. The need to wear a specific type of clothing, or like a sport are almost demanded of by the school. It is ok to not like the sport, but not to show major disdain for it.
The disconnect with the people involved can be done with groupings. For instance within the theater, people may go see a film with friends. They are connected or grouped together and believe it is important to sit next to each other and share popcorn. Unless there has already been a connection with some other viewers in the room, this group is the only unit that will stay intact after the movie. In fact, some may even give up a place they want to sit because the group wants to sit somewhere else.
In highschool and in college it is the same. The small group that connects will continue their friendship after college, but will likely forget anyone outside of the group. These groups interact with other groups and even form into larger formations. So a sports enthusiast group may happen to have runners for track, wrestlers, boxers, basketball players, and badminton players. Because of the length of time within highschool an individual may identify himself with many different groups, and work to be seen well in them.
Some groups may rival others and will attempt to one up or outdo another. So the chemistry team may place a super slick substance on the basketball court right before a game. They view the basketball team as rivals, and not a part of the chemistry team. However if a member of the chemistry team is playing, there is a less likelihood of the super slick substance.
Either way, they are caught up in the moment of where they are and what is happening. The rules are actually for them to enjoy being caught up in the situation. The rivalries and working within different groups is part of the situation and thus perfectly healthy for the environment.
The knowledge that they will not know each other after highschool is hidden from students as a way to keep the cooperation to continue. A place and time when all of the groups are together, and caught up in their own situation would likely be the spot of attack. This spot would have a mutual understanding between groups that it is a neutral area and should be left alone. So a cafeteria, or a library.
So the area is a place where people move around, but do not respond to others since they are caught up in their own worlds. It is a place designated neutral by any groups that frequent the area.
The attacker views this area as his place of power. He believes he is above these people and that for some reason he must assert himself over it. The idea of showing his power is part of the narrative he is giving to his actions.
The next part is deciding on a time. The area must be full of the groups or people, and it must have them in a fully distracted view. Eating Lunch, reading a book, and even watching a movie would allow the distraction.
The time must be when the groups are entering and most of them are distracted. So a shopping center in the middle of the lunch rush would fit this description. The attacker can walk in and place his needed items without being noticed.
The attacker will set up a way to control the area. So the initial response of the people will actually be to do what the attacker wants. For example, bombs were placed in the emergency meeting places at Littleton Highschool. There were also bombs placed in area that would have high amounts of students attempting to hide. Luckily the bombs were not built well and did not go off.
When James Holmes walked into the movie theater, he began to shoot in a way that would make people flee into an area that would be easier for him to fire at. This is part of his narrative, that he controls the people involved.
The Virginia Tech shooter locked the door in one building and said it would blow up if anyone tried to escape. Then he walked in and began to shoot those within the building.
So a place where the fear from the initial attack will cause the people in the area to act in the way the attacker desires. A closed in area that can be locked or make the responders unable to act against his will. He will live out his greatest desire to be seen as powerful by this group.
The reasons to seem powerful to this group are finally the part that helps decide the location. It must be a large group of people that the attacker wants to impress. This group fits into his own personal desire to seem powerful. Not only this, the view is that they are powerful and are in fact asserting their power over this group. In other words, it must be a group the attacker responds to either in a negative or even positive way. The strongly held belief that this will impress or state power is the narrative given.
The attacker then plans out the attack in a way that proves they have more power than the group. A gang member drives to the house of another gang and shoots it to prove their power. A terrorist blows up a marketplace to show they have power over the common man. Two kids shoot up their highschool to show they have power over the school.
Seeing this pattern of decision we can then take this and apply it to the attacker himself and see why he is doing it. The narrative can only be held if the attacker wants power over the group, and also views himself as separate from it. The attacker plans it out so that they assert this power. They plan out a time that they know will be busy and easily controllable. This mindset can be calculated to a certain extent.
The factors included are how much the person views the group with some form of connection. The next one is how much power he views himself over the group. We then compare this to how much the person is actually part of the group and his acceptance of it.
        So, (C*P)/(Cn*A).
Because this article is not going into how to detail each number, the system will be arbitrary or guessed for this introduction.
A member of the Sunni sect of the Muslim religion goes to the market every day. She talks with everyone she meets and laughs about things. She feels a connection to this area and its people to a full scale or 5 (out of 5). However she feels comfortable but not powerful within the area. So a 2.5 out of 5. So together within the marketplace she feels a 12.5 of belonging to the area. Within this area is a Shia store that has gotten along well with everyone else. One day the Shia area begins to show preferential treatment to other Shia buyers, even having better items for sale that only go to Shia. This sudden change is disruptive in the mind of our Sunni. This disconnect is also a 5, however she understands that this is because of the mutual religious beliefs and nothing personal. She accepts it at a level of 3.5. It saddens her but she understands. So her disconnect is a 17.5. Her acceptance of the area is about .72. If she became friends with the Shia store owner and began to gain some items that only other Shia were able to buy, then her power would increase by one, but her disconnect lessons by one as well. Her sense of acceptance of the area also increases by .5. So she goes from 12.5 to 17.5 in connection, and then her disconnect is 18. This means she connects to the area at .97. The closer she reaches to 1, the more connection she has. Also, the higher the number goes, the more emotional value is being placed.
One day her husband goes to pick up an item at the store. He comes back with a story that the store owner treated him badly. Our friend goes to the place to find out what had happened. They tell her that he acted badly and obviously it comes from their religious beliefs. the disconnect to the area grows to a full 5 again, and the acceptance of this drops a great deal. It goes down to a 2 in disbelief of what had happened to this wonderful friendship.
She sees that the other stores treat her kindly, and she still has the strong connection to this marketplace. She feels she has been slighted and that somehow owner of the store slighted her. Her power grows to a 4 and her connection stays the same.
This begins to grow, and every chance she gets to stop this ends harshly. She is now at connection to the area at 20 and disconnect at 10 or a 2. The higher one gets from one, the more chance there is that the person will respond in a way to assert her power. Luckily for this story the Shia store owner and the Sunni woman come back to friendly terms before anything happens. Had it continued like this, the response would have come. Had every meeting with the shop owner and the buyer ended badly, but the buyer still has a large connection to the marketplace, then the shop owner would have suffered. Had it gone past 2 then a violent response would be likely.
For the majority of people a connection to an area is less than one. If it is a special spot like a hometown or a hang out it would have reached 1. Being disconnected from that area would have caused a strong emotional response and the decisions to respond would have been based on the comparing numbers. Likewise a new place is so small from one that it doesn’t really matter. It has no real connection for the person. The more a person feels an emotional connection or spends time around an area the higher the feelings of connection.
When dealing with nomadic peoples, you may find that at first they would be perfect for an attack. However, they do not feel a strong connection to the area, and are fairly accepting of this. So the likelihood of an attack is small since it would mean continued negative interactions with an area. They would sooner leave than stay and fight.
In conclusion, after looking at the information we find that the majority of things being talked about for school shootings are mostly false. They are built up to create a narrative or coping ability to deal with the chaos of the event. Had someone been able to stop the event, we created an equation to show the possibility of difference between action and inaction. Then we went into the why and how a place and people are chosen out. We even built an equation to show how the emotional self decides on such places. We find out that there is ways to understand the chaos and the attempt to respond to what had happened. Hopefully more work and better scientists can use this information for the better.

Thomas McRobie

Physics has completely changed the way historians study. A while back if you mentioned being a historian people would assume you were knee deep in papers and interviewing anyone that knew something about the subject. Today, we just look at the exact events as they went. A true historian today has to show what happened but also make the viewer feel like they are enjoying the subject. So I get to be a movie director or something of a subject that may have only lasted a few minutes.

Watching the bullet as it leaves Lee Harvey Oswalds gun and enters in Kennedy is by far one of the greatest moments in history. How Gregory MacBruce was able to show that kind of finesse inspires me every time I watch that. Then he is able to show why Oswald was shot. Keep in mind that there were constant conspiracy theories out there. The Mob had the hit out on Oswald the second they realized their friend Jack was dead. They weren’t covering up, they were getting revenge. Oh that was amazing.

Sorry, I get caught up in that sort of stuff. The first big video was done by a production team that could barely get their room to look good enough for the director to tell the cameras where to aim. Yet every hand motion, every command, every movement was the precursor to the work I now do. I doubt anyone could have gotten a greater break. I mean, they had the access to the machines needed, and the knowledge of camera work and post production skills to make it look right. “Behold your King” sold out at every theater it was in. There was no movie that has ever made as much money as that one. It’s true, there have been several production teams with better equipment and skills that have filmed the life of Christ, but this was the first time anyone had ever shown the actual Chosen One.

I don’t really get how they do it either. From what the techs tell me, they know the majority of matter on earth, and if there is a record they can follow a formation of atoms and molecules as far back as it was formed, and then it gets tricky. Following subatomic particles and what they were connected to for thousands of years back to the point needed, and then scanning sounds incredibly boring to me. A bunch of equations and brain cells just figuring out if this brick is old enough to show the time of Rome requires help from historians, but also a willingness to just sit and watch it for hours just to make sure. Day in and Day out you are watching it rewind back to the time needed, and then someone shows up and lays it down where it is now right after the time you needed, so you need a different brick.

I don’t do the quiet stuff. I prefer sports. In fact I tend to go at it without as much precaution as I should and get injured. I could set it up so that the players pass straight through me, and sometimes I do. I want to feel their breath so then I can get a close up of their faces and show the insanity in their eyes.

The other day I got knocked down pretty hard. I was filming a boxing match between George Foreman and Ron Lyle. Oh sorry, back in the day they would make a ring or box and tell two guys to get in there and beat the snot out of each other. The game ended when one of them died. This game wasn’t so bad, they had pads on their hands, and a knock out simply meant they couldn’t get back up during a count of ten. Boxing during that time meant only punches and it had to be above the beltline. It was still intense though. I like to show close up of the skull cracking and maybe the brain moving back and forth from the impact.

So this fight was between two guys that just hated each other. The first couple rounds was intense, but that third round seemed impossible. They stopped all pretense and just went at it.

I was trying to dodge around them, but Lyle got knocked back right where I was standing. He was sent to the ropes and was trying to just back up enough to get his head straight. The problem was I was right behind him. His head knocked back and planted straight into my poor shoulders. I ducked and rolled way, but Foreman’s foot smashed right into my head. I knew there was no way for me to stop them, but I screamed anyway.

The tech’s should have stopped it all right then, but they were off somewhere. Instead, I was rolling on the ground trying to figure out where to move. I knew Lyle was going to fall soon when I looked up. A perfect shot of Foreman throwing a punch right into Lyle’s jaw. I heard the crack and saw his face go slack. Instead of trying to dodge, I got the camera cues up and got the shots as these two giants gave up all ideas of maneuvering and just threw punches.

Lyle got Foreman nearer to me and I moved back staring at a wonderful set of shorts. I forgot to stand back up, and then Foreman moved forward to land a blow. I felt the sweat falling off of them as I tried to get away and get good shots at the same time.

You can imagine my thoughts as Lyle fell right on top of me as I tried to run out of the ring. I knew that this game had already happened, Lyle was going to hit the mat exactly as he did in real life. He would crush me since in this room I wasn’t actually there. Just a ghost of some time yet to come, and yet about to die from it.

I don’t know where the power came from, but I threw myself out of the ring as Lyle landed. He struggled to get back up, and I knew this was the end for him. He wouldn’t get back up. I tried to lift my hands up to cue the camera, but instead saw everything go hazy. I had forgotten about the men standing outside the ring. They were kicking me in the head as I tried to hide from them. My body ached all over as I crawled under the ring for safety unable to get the shots I wanted. I kept cursing that my hands couldn’t make the cue sign. My fingers wouldn’t bend correctly.

It sort of went hazy and then a tech appeared in the nice white room above me. They had turned off everything, and I had probably been out or something for a few minutes. In my mind he just showed up and everything was off. They apologized a lot, but I knew, they had a recording of the entire thing ready to show off my own stupidity.

I lay down and let the doctors take care of me, putting my bones back in place and reforming parts of my face. I guess my hands were stepped on a lot because they were almost mush. Modern medicine at its finest, in my opinion, is taking a beat up idiot like me, and making him whole again. I thanked them as best I could and asked if I could go back to the game. I wanted those final shots, I wanted back in.

My proff appeared next to me. I knew it was something big. I knew I was in trouble, I just didn’t know what kind. He stared at me for a long moment and then chuckled.

“You’ll make a fine PhD candidate in my mind, I give my full support for that. Just never teach, ever,” He said at last.

I stared at him for a moment and then tried to laugh. Thats about when we realized I had some broken ribs as well. Modern medicine again to the rescue on this fool of an idiot. I was given leave for the next day to regain my senses and permission to refilm. So yes, I love history, I love it dearly, I just have no idea how anybody got anything like this from all those papers.

My name is Thomas McRobie and I am a historian.

Aim for the Heart

When I discuss being a videograpber with friends, and how social media has changed it, I get angry responses from time to time. To my friends, the camera is just an object. It can only tell the truth and videographers need to stay out of problems. What they don’t realize is that the camera is the new weapon, and one that protest organizers understand very well.
Protesters are lining the streets for their cause. The police respond to this new threat. The NEWS reports it and we all end up wondering what really happened. While walking home one day I began to ask questions about the administration of these protests. Not the view, but how they were being taken care of.
This essay is not to discuss the ideas, politics, or even statements by the Occupy Wall Street movement, antiglobalization movement, global warming demonstrators, or any view that is now modernly found. It is more on the idea of how these movements work. What are the basic things keeping them going. How are they recruiting others to join? What is keeping them at the protest area? How are their basic needs such as bathrooms and food taken care of? Then finally, how have public servants dealt with taking care of the area and people of the movement? In other words, what keeps the protests running?
We need to discuss some things first before answering the questions. The first is the multiple narrative theory. The second is how media is now used with facebook and cameras. The third is that my personal opinions on the subject are not really involved with the answers given.
Nationalism is the idea of using a movement as a form of semi religion. The leaders place sacred ideals or objects to be wanted for. They make it seem that not everyone can get in, and that this group is very important. They promote their stories and ideas as if it were doctrine.
As video technology and the internet have improved and become cheaper more and more people can promote their own narrative. This means that the ideas of a nationalism that can only accept one idea now has more competition. There will be many nationalisms and narratives being told, and thus groups forming up behind the ideas.
The camera and internet are used to promote these ideas in direct form. It is not pushed onto the NEWS but onto Facebook. The videos may look sloppy, but they are well edited and many of the camera crew had privileges allowed to them.
When these new forms of nationalism begin to do battle, the camera becomes one of the most powerful weapons used. A youtube video can go viral and make others believe it completely. This is the reason why so many youtube videos will be used in this article. Luckily the author happens to be a good editor and cameraman and can show how the angles and edits were used to create the narrative.
Remember, just because this is being shown does not mean that the author agrees with the group. He is pointing out what is happening, not his own personal opinions. Trying to find out the truth in such a debate is pointless since that is not what is being used. One must always realize that the videos were made with a specific narrative in mind, and that pointing out what it is and how it is being done does not mean an agreement. For every video that is cited within this paper, there are 20 or more just like it on the internet promoting the ideas of the various groups.
Recruitment for a protest is done with several narratives. Many people go to a protest for the feeling of camaraderie within a cause. Others go to enjoy the party feeling. Others feel that they are fighting against an evil thing within the society itself.
The first thought is for those that feel they are part of a movement. A video or message that rings well with a person is enough to bring some protestors. They feel they are part of a movement and can feel proud of this. The meaning of the protest can be forgotten so long as it is similar enough.

The next feeling is usually seen with funny protest signs. These people tend to go to protests more as a way to hang out. They don’t so much agree as see it as a chance to hang out. When speaking with friends at highschool, this seemed to be the common reason for going. It was curiosity and a chance to party.
The final thought tends to get the most publicity. They are the ones who believe that they are going against an evil empire and that everything they do is allowed. This group has two sub groups and they must be known.
The first subthought are those that feel they are going against the evil empire and thus show the evil empire itself. These are by far the best recruiters for the movement. They will post videos of police violence and anything they consider shady.
In the minds of these protestors, every single person on the other side is dehumanized and placed within something with an authoritorial image. The stormtroopers from Star Wars or any other faceless but dangerous group is the image placed.
The second subthought is that of protesting can be done any way wanted. These thoughts are that the evil organization, government, or business needs to be taken down by any means necessary. The stormtrooper still appears in the mind, but has an active attempt to thwart. The strength of these thoughts can lead to problems.
Within most videos posted, the feelings and thoughts show these ideas. A recruitment video would be something such as “Riot Police attack peaceful protesters at G20 Climate Camp[1]” we see the protestors standing and chanting with each other. We see police respond as if they are stormtroops to a peaceful movement of like minded people. What the police are thinking about is not important here. It is how the video portrays the police in this situation and others like it. The protesters are seen as brave and going against the evil organization that put the police there.
This video is then placed on facebook and blogs and seen as what actually happened. This video and many like it work to create a support group and thus more recruits are found.
Now that the recruits are found and at the protest, what keeps them at the area? This may sound strange, but simply sitting and doing nothing will get boring in a few hours.
The answer is themes and planned events. In the website for one of the groups that organized the G20/G8 protests in Toronto in 2010, the main page has a section on planned events[2]. Such things as a “Tea Party” where they burn money, or a climate protest with workshops and plays[3].
In a video for the TV show Conan, we see similar ideas at the Occupy Wall Street Movement in 2011[4].
There are spontaneous things such as drum groups.

And obviously planned events such as paper airplanes being made up of letters to Wall Street being thrown at the Dow Jones building.
When you look at it from this view, many of the events that seem to just happen by anger and resentment begin to look well planned out. This centers the most on Black Bloc protests[5]. The societal view of them is that of rioters and miscreants without cause.

The pictures[6] shows that people dressed up for the event and even prepared signs and weapons for the protest. To do this would have taken planning and scheduling. The riot was scheduled and controlled.
Giving events and scheduled themes for the protest allows the people who have gathered to do something and feel that they are a part of something big. When this happens, the protesters begin to treat the event as they view it. Some deal with it as a party, others see it as a chance to rail against the system. They dress up and come prepared for the day with their views feeling validated.
Within this context the even begins to be seen in similar veins as other groups that gather and dress up. Conventions such as Comicon have similar things of people who are there to party, want to be part of a movement, and even deal with ideas of repression. The convention has scheduled events and people enjoy dressing up when going[7].
Now that the people are coming and staying, how does one feed and take care of so many protesters?
The website for the G20 protest movement has Medical Resources listed as part of their volunteer force[8]. This shows that there are people ready and willing to take care of any injuries at protests.
Finding food supplies and bathroom information was tricky. Within the Conan video a food tent is found.
There are also signs that people are sleeping there and not taking showers or baths.

So it should be expected that somehow many protesters are staying in the area. However, this is only a part of the group and not a whole. There are several layers of protester going to the area. The first is the unwashed camping out protester who never leaves. Very likely they are being taken care of by other volunteers who go and buy food for them.
The next group comes and goes as needed. They appear well fed and well groomed.
As can be seen, they are showering and shaving and leaving to take care of themselves. Whether they have money to buy food from a vendor or go home to eat is unknown. It is obvious though that they stay and leave for their own needs to be met.
The next group visits and leaves based on the party given and do not visit often. Perhaps they only go for one day, but still feel as if they are a part of the group in whole.
Lastly, there are online supporters who post pictures or videos of what they have seen. The 99% tumblr page shows protesters who feel strongly about what is going on[9]. They may not be able to go to the protest or simply do not have the personal desire to do so, but they show public support of this protest.
Finally there are the people who publicly support, but do not post pictures of themselves. They post links on facebook, or change their own picture to a protest sign already made and shared to them. For instance the below picture was a common thing to find as a avatar picture in facebook during the SOPA protests.
The protest still has people in it, but it appears that financially speaking they are being supported as they protest. The group for the G20 protest has many special funds and supports to help keep themselves and other protests afloat.
The major things to worry about is the amount of litter being left by the protest groups, and any damage done. This of course means the need for public administration and police needs. This brings up the final question about the difficulties of the Public Administration and what to do?
The protest organizers use the police as a ways of recruitment. In the G20 protest website there are instructions on how to deal with the police[10] and requests for videos and pictures of police brutality[11]. Youtube videos show that the violence done by rioters was actually police[12].
Police have admitted that they are sending in undercover officers into protests to find the violent and problematic protesters[13]. Which has lead to outright confrontations and accusations of black bloc members as police instigators[14].
If we relook at the video of the Climategate camp vs the Police we can see something else happening.
The police are surrounded by protesters and begin to fight back with more aggression. The only way to deal with such a vast group of protesters who view you as stormtroopers is to dehumanize them back. Large crowds of people become angry zombies in seconds, and as the protesters attempt to overpower the police, that reality and sense of survival kicks in.
It becomes difficult for police to respond correctly when anything they do is viewed as part of some evil organization. They use cameras to find out who is who within the rally and attempt to document everything as best as possible.
Attempts to legitimize the protest comes up against the feelings that it would mean the protesters have become part of the problem[15]. So the best answer then becomes to legitimize the protests. It would scare away the problem protesters and make it easier for things to be taken care of.
The next part would be to get cameras into the hands of those not involved. The Pinto Pony videos showed far more than any NEWS channel or Protester video. In fact, in the video of the black bloc riot many rioters were demanding that the cameras be turned off. When asked why, a protester responded.
“It’s all just part of the spectacle.”
In closing, the movement of protesters in our modern time has been followed more on the reasons to protest than how the protest happens. If we study why people go, we see that most protesters are more interested in a party and the movement than any threat. The organizers of the movements are organized and have scheduled events and parties to keep people coming. The use of cameras and videos are for recruitment and to portray the movement itself as peaceful and the police as a horrible enemy. The police are caught in a rock and a hard place and are working to document the problems back.
We realize that the camera becomes the weapon. When edited the video shows the narrative of what the videographer wants. When people try to deal with a problem by aiming a gun at a camera, they only find out that they created more problems. The world of media and social networking defeats the older methods and creates new ones.

Other Civilization: Romans and Germans

The Other Civilization                                Keith Borgholthaus
The accepted history of mankind shows a time called Early Civilization. The usual explanation is there were only a few that really existed. The Phoenicians, the Egyptians, and the Greeks slowly built up grand halls of learning and education. The rest of the world watched as civilization slowly grew and took over, and then finally began to unite into a giant global unit.
The problem with this assessment is that there were people meeting and talking, even going global, before these civilizations said it happened. For example, the Romans covered a large expanse of land, slowly conquering and declaring victory. The people outside of that realm, the Germanians, had connections with other groups as far as the Eurasian continent could go. They fought wars with peoples that held empires larger than Ceaser could imagine. Yet, when we talk of history, it is the Romans that get the credit as civilization than the other.
This Other Civilization was just as amazing as the first. This essay will cover the time when the Germans and Romans met. First we will cover how far the Germans have travelled to today. Then we will go back to the time of the Germans and Romans met and competed. The thought process between the two and how they dealt with problems. The conversation will get into the idea of the trickster Loki and how he worked. Then we will go into what happened after the fall of the Romans.
  1. The Germans are global
  2. The Romans
  1. Germanica
  2. Germania
  1. Trickster/Loki
  2. wolkenwandrung.
This is a picture of Germania in the minds of the Roman people. You will notice that Germany is only a part of the lands being covered.
After the fall of Rome, the Germanic peoples begin to wander and take over large parts of Europe. The Lombards, the Anglo-Saxons, the Franks and others began to spread out and take over previously Roman lands.
This isn’t the first time this happens either. The Vikings take over lands again  from the 8th to 11th centuries[2]. So Europe has a large Germanic ethnic population before we even get into visiting the Americas.
The British Colonies had German and Dutch immigrants. Keep in mind, Germany did not exist yet so much of England viewed them as the same people. Benjamin Franklin wrote of German and Dutch colonists,
And since Detachments of English from Britain sent to America, will have their Places at Home so soon supply'd and increase so largely here; why should the Palatine Boors be suffered to swarm into our Settlements, and by herding together establish their Language and Manners to the Exclusion f ours? Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a Colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our Language or Customs, any more than they can acquire our Complexion[3].
The Germans at this time were still the foreigners, even though the English colonists were descendants of Saxons. Let us not forget that the king of England at this time was a Hannover. This immigration continued throughout the history of the United States. The Scandinavians came into Minnesota and the Northern Midwest without much notice[4].
It goes further than that, Germans migrated everywhere there was a colony to be found[5]. They were on naval vessels for every country, and therefore helped build the colonies they would live in. Yet no one really noticed this.
The American revolution was very strange. The British forces had the British Saxons, and then hired mercenaries from Hessia which is near Denmark. The American side had German and Dutch immigrants, and then French Soldiers, many of whom did not speak French but a form of Germanic speech common to the lower peoples.
Argentina had Germans, and so did much of South America. Africa had several different groups that were Germanic colonists[6]. The Dutch East Indies and other trading groups spread language and ideals throughout the world.
This leads me to point out that there are several people from Polynesian cultures that have heritage to German and Dutch travelers. In other words, while no one was noticing the Germans globalized.
This is just one culture, one ethnic group that spread throughout the world. There are hundreds of them doing the exact same thing. We don’t notice them because they fall under “lower” groups, or don’t follow our own national ideals. They adapt to their new culture and keep parts of the old one as well. So we have a huge sense of diversity from ethnic groups that most people are simply not watching. In fact, it gets even odder. Some of these groups have had entire Empires, and because they were based on movement instead of traditional civilization systems, no one remarked about it.
In the book Empires of the Silk Road, the author Christopher Beckwith points out that the Germans had similar cultural aspects as the people of Central Asia. The common things were  long braided hair, a system of brotherhood among warriors called comitatus, and burial of a warrior with his weapons[7].  The infamous nazi symbol of the swastika can be found throughout the Eurasian continent[8]. In other words an ideal of civilization had spread throughout Eurasia, no one noticed, and the Germans were part of it.
First things first though, we need a name for this civilization that we have ignored. I call it the Other Civilization, for two reasons. The first is that Other tends to be the term for people that fall into the foreign and unknown. The mystical other is something that has been used to describe many of the groups throughout history. The second reason is with a simple honesty, when talking about these two different civilizations the people involved will often say, “No, no, the Other Civilization... the one that travelled.”
The comparison between them now needs a term for the more traditional idea of civilization. This one used a more permanent style. It viewed itself in slow moving and historical ways. We tend to trust the sources from this civilization more than the Other. It relies on Walls and Rules to keep power among the people. This is not just walls in real life, but walls in the mind and culture as well.
To give an idea of walls and rules you must see how it was used.
In fact, some historians believe that the history of the Germans did not exist unless the Romans appeared. To quote Hagen Schulze in his book Germany: A New History:
The origins of German history lie not in the primeval forests of the north but in Rome, the unique city state that at its height ruled the entire Mediterranean and all of Europe to the Rhine, the Danube, and to the Limes, the wall at the northern border. Roman Civilization, while taking on many local forms, acted as a unifying force; for the people of ancient times it provided a world with clearly defined outlines under an ecumenical roof. There was no higher status than being a Roman Citizen; the apostle Paul was just as proud of it as Hermann, tribal chief of the Chrusci, despite their differences with Rome. The poet Virgil, who in the Aeneid conceived and related the legend of how the Roman state was founded, declared that it was Rome’s task to rule the world and and to bring law and civilization in times of peace, sparing the conquered and punishing the rebellious[9].
In other words, without the civilization of Rome, Germans would not exist as a historical figure. Rome itself was what brought even the savage to understand civilization and law.
Within that same text we find reference to the Limes, the walls that separated the Germanic forces and the Roman Empire. A similar wall was built for the Roman colonies in Brittan[10]. Then another set of walls for the impenetrable fortress of Lugo in Spain[11].
These walls were also placed on any settlement or colony by the Roman empire.
This is a map of Londinium or London during the Roman Era. Note how everything is placed with a system of roads, and walls. Then notice how each place is for a specific thing. People live in one place. The military stays in the northern area. There are places for entertainment. All of this is kept within walls.
So the land was kept within walls, and then more walls.
The Limes of Germany were constructed as a way to mark the difference between Roman land and the German land[13]. Within the map on Germania above, you find the line between the Roman Empire and the Other people of Germania. This line was literally the Limes. The purpose was more to keep trade between the Germans and perhaps as a buffer to the farther groups. Within the book by Beckwith we find that perhaps the Huns did not invade the Roman Empire but to invade and punish the Germanic Goths[14]. The King Ermanaric had perhaps expanded over territory that was Hsiung-nu and refused to pay the proper obeisance to Attila.
Within the same quote from Hagen, we see the Limes and the idea of Civilization bringing Law to others. Yet, there were laws and rules placed by the Germanic peoples on how to do things.
Cornelius Tacitus wrote that the Germanic people had rules. For example Homicide:
It is a duty among them to adopt the feuds as well as the friendships of a father or a kinsman. These feuds are not implacable; even homicide is expiated by the payment of a certain number of cattle and of sheep, and the satisfaction is accepted by the entire family, greatly to the advantage of the state, since feuds are dangerous in proportion to the people's freedom[15].
As it can be seen, just by this small rule, the Romans knew the Germans had civilization. Somehow though, the idea was not accepted.
The reason for this was that the Germanic peoples did not act in the same way or thoughts as the Romans. The Romans understood the rules of the Other, but not the ideas behind it.
Again in Tacitus writing we find comments on who the Germans pray to:
Mercury is the deity whom they chiefly worship, and on certain days they deem it right to sacrifice to him even with human victims. Hercules and Mars they appease with more lawful offerings. Some of the Suevi also sacrifice to Isis. Of the occasion and origin of this foreign rite I have discovered nothing, but that the image, which is fashioned like a light galley, indicates an imported worship. The Germans, however, do not consider it consistent with the grandeur of celestial beings to confine the gods within walls, or to liken them to the form of any human countenance. They consecrate woods and groves, and they apply the names of deities to the abstraction which they see only in spiritual worship[16].
Note how he has added Mercury and Hercules to the gods. No mention of the names of what the Germans call them.
We begin to see the reason with Cities:
It is well known that the nations of Germany have not cities, and that they do not even tolerate closely contiguous dwellings. They live scattered and apart, just as a spring, a meadow, or a wood has attracted them. Their village they do not arrange in our fashion, with the buildings connected and joined together, but every person surrounds his dwelling with an open space, either as a precaution against the disasters of fire, or because they do not know how to build. No use is made by them of stone or tile; they employ timber for all purposes, rude masses without ornament or attractiveness[17].
The Germans did not care for houses. They were things to live in, and that was it. But why? Why would the Germans view this unless they did not view a single place as permanent.
Within a similar history, King Darius charged after scythian warriors to teach them a lesson. The Scythians were much like the Germans and one of the groups that shared the common civilization ideas as the Germans. Darius went well outside of his land to pursue them and found his men slowly falling apart. When finally he had them cornered, the scythians warriors disbanded and left which ever way they felt like. When Darius demanded a fight, the response was this.
It is thus with me, Persian: I have never fled for fear of any man, nor do I now flee from you; this that I have done is no new thing or other than my practice of peace. But as to the reason why I do not straightway fight with you, this too will I tell you. For we Scythians have no towns or planted lands, that we might meet you the sooner in battle, fearing the one be taken or the other wasted. But if nothing will serve you but fighting straightway, we have the graves of our fathers; come, find these and essay to destroy them; then shall you know whether we will fight you for those graves or no. Till then we will not join battle unless we think it good[18].
As you can see, the ability to move and to not actually go into the conflict helped the scythians destroy an enemy without having to fight them. When push came to shove, the scythians left in victory[19].
Within these thoughts, we find a people that do not view staying as a permanent thing. They view trade and movement as needed, and the ability to leave as all part of life. The land itself was just a thing. The Roman maps of the land would not mean what the Hun, German, or Scythian saw[20]. In fact the walls themselves perhaps represented nothing to the German traders as compared to the Roman Citizen.
Then why did the Romans view themselves as the law bringers? Why did they view the walls as a way to create laws?
The Romans believed in rules not only in the construction of buildings but in their minds. The drawing of lines on a map, and then building walls to represent those lines went deeper. As was said earlier citizenship was not given to everyone within the Roman system. To have this citizenship meant rights and privileges that no other person could hold. Caesar could give it to someone or not, and those who had it held it as a sign of better class[21].
Then within the Germanic system any leader would be held acccountable by those below him. Although he had rights, there were expectations for him to reward. If he did not, his popularity would fall. The system of Comitatus demanded that there be a brotherhood, even if one had gained more than the other[22].
Thus the system of class, and the system of rules begins to make walls in the mind. The separation between citizen and freedman would be huge in the eyes of the people within Rome. Whereas the warriors in Germania would be seen as strange.
This pattern followed also in other books on those who followed Walls and Rules against those that were of the Other.
Pekka Hamalainen wrote of the Commanche Empire and how it had taken over the midwest, yet none of the Spanish and then Mexican troops recognized that this was happening. The Commanche did not view the map in the same way, and instead saw the buffalo as the thing to conquer. They would fight wars to have access to the herds, and then raid for weapons and horses to continue the hunts. At one point in the book, a description of a Commanche meeting describes the suddenly put together city as very large[23].
Beckwith actually covers all of central Eurasia. His description of the people is that of traders. Because of them, the trade on the Silk Road continued to thrive[24].
Within this research is questions on how the groups reacted or told stories. The most interesting problem would be how to deal with a trickster. The Native American trickster stories were a major part of telling how things worked, an accident would create the stars in the sky, a theft would create the sun and the moon. Likewise characters like Monkey and Loki show up. Monkey being the Chinese character who was always doing things for himself and angering the gods. Loki the old German and Scandinavian god not only helped build Valhalla but also brought Ragnarok. Loki the trickster will be used for this time.
Anthropology is a modern thought process, but it arrived around the same time as the first theory of Loki arrived. Jacob Grimm gave the first opinion of it in the 19th century as Loki being a God of Fire. He referenced the fact that Loki shows up in many terms of the time with the word fire[25]. Grimm was attempting to catalog the culture of his people and bring understanding to it as best he could. His brother and he recorded a great deal of folklore, linguistical knowledge and cultural aspects to share.
Then in 1889 Sophus Bugge proposed that Loki was in fact Lucifer. His reasoning was that within Medival tales the Devil would appear in three parts, Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Satan. Loki was in fact one of three trickster brothers, the other two being Thor and Odin. He attempts to  link old English, Irish, Christian, and Germanic tales together. It does not go to well[26].
Claude Levi Strauss attempted to explain it in 1967 by saying:
The trickster of American mythology has remained so far a problematic figure. Why is it that throughout North America his role is assigned proactically everywhere to either coyote or raven?
….
If we keep in mind that mythical thought always progresses from the awareness of oppositions toward their resolution, the reason for these choices, becomes clearer. We need only assume that two opposite terms with no intermediary always tend to be replaced by two equivalent terms which admit of a third one as a mediator; then one of the polar terms and the mediator become replaced by a new triad, and so on[27].
He goes on and tries to explain that this mediator is how we can understand the trickster. His basic thought was that everything had a single set purpose in understanding. The two opposites of a subject would need a mediator to help understand the subject. The trickster would be the mediator between being good, and doing what needs to be done to survive.
Another attempt by Anna Birgitta Rooth says that Loki is also a word for Spider, and that if a person slowly takes the idea apart you find that he was a spider the entire time[28].
The most recent attempt was by H. R. Ellis Davidsons belief that the Celts and the Germanic tribes were telling the same stories back and forth between each other. Her beliefs are that Odin and Loki are both tricksters using subterfuge to get out of tricky situations[29].
The writings of the trickster would seem obvious to those in the Other Civilization. The need for survival, the ability to adapt, the need to outsmart or outwit someone.
The tale of the wall of Valhalla could help in describing the need for a Loki. As the town was being built, a man was hired to build a great wall around it. He used the use of his horse, and was able to lift great rocks to the city. It was soon that the Gods realized that he was a giant and wanted to gain power over the gods. Loki -spelled Loke in the story- turned himself into a mare and enticed the horse to run with him. This let the wall be unfinished on time and thus the giant had no power over the Gods.  Loki in turn as a horse gave birth to an eight legged horse named Sleipnir, of which Odin now rides[30].
Within this story, a deal between the gods and a wall builder is made. The oaths given can not be taken back. The need to undo them is great, but the Gods are trapped in what to do. Loki is the only one who thinks of a way to save the day. His ability to change the odds was needed. So it is with many travelers tales, Loki is neither good nor evil, he is both a friend and an annoyance to the Gods, and yet he is one of the great catalysts in the stories of Valhalla.
During the last years of Rome, the Germanic tribes and the Huns began to slowly take more and more power. Although in Roman minds, the Limes still represented the borders of Rome, the reality was that the land was slowly going to the Other. The attemp to explain this within history was difficult because the writers of history viewed the Romans as the greater than the Other.
 Bury wrote in 1928:
… The Hun Empire helped performed a function of much greater significance to European history. It helped to retard the whole process of the German dismemberment of the [Roman] Empire. … This retardation of the process of dismemberment, enabling the imperial government to maintain itself for a longer period in those lands which were destined ultimately to become Teutonic Kingdoms, was all in the interest of civilization; for the Germans, who in almost all cases were forced to establish their footing on imperial territory as federates,  and who then by degrees converted this dependent relation into independent sovranty, were to more likely to gain some faint apprehension of Roman order, some slight taste for Roman civilization, than if their careers of conquest had been less gradual and impeded[31].
In his mind the Germanic horde was the winner, but they learned from the Romans and thus allowed civilization to continue. This diffusion of thought was only from the above to the lower class and never the other way around. These thoughts were accepted within academics at the time of his writing[32].
This belief held like this until recent years. The migrations never really stopped though. The German immigrants[33] and those of the Other Civilization travelled throughout the world. However, new views on the nomadic peoples have begun to show that the Other Civilization has been a major part of history. Such historians as Beckwith and Hamalainen have begun to change the view of the world as owned by one system of civilization.
The Germanic peoples now cover much of this world and for the most part no one has realized this. It is not a nationalistic feeling within the people but a cultural acceptance. The idea of the nomad does not make sense within nationalism. The nomad would ignore the walls and the continue to travel. The trickster tale of Loki continues to confound the mind of those that want to make an order with thick walls and lines drawn. In the end, he stops the walls from being made by becoming a horse. Modern looks at the Other Civilization have shown that they were incredibly well organized, just used differently from how the Classical ideas worked.
In closing, as archaeologists, historians, and anthropologists begin to find more and more history about the Other Civilization we begin to look again at how it was viewed in times past. People like Tacitus remain important because we can see how the classical acceptance of Walls and Rules dealt with those that did not view walls in the same way. He sheds light on what was known about the people at the time. There is still a great deal of history to learn, and the adventure calls and sleipnir is ready.
